The Finals

Singapore Cricket Club laid claim to the first title of the SRU National Rugby Championships when the SCC Division Two defeated Bucks Rugby 18 - 6 at the Division 2 Bowl Finals at the Padang.

Both teams were undefeated going into the match and a close encounter was expected.

SCC opened their accounts as early as in the 3rd minute when No. 8 Valmiki Nair converted a penalty for SCC to leas 3- 0.

With much of the battle was in the forward pack, SCC has a bigger share of the proceedings as their forwards dominated play. The backs could not finish off the possession that was supplied by the forwards and it was a case of both, a strong Bucks defence out wide as well as SCC's back three being unable to convert the opportunities.

In the 9th minute, Valmiki misses a penalty and the opportunity to extend SCC's lead.

Bucks then started getting their patterns into play and were duly rewarded when fullback Marcus Ahye converted a penalty to level the game at 3 - 3 in the 15th minute.

An injury to SCC first choice wing in the 18thth minute led to the introduction of reserve Alex Chua and in the 20th minute, Valmiki converted another penalty to put SCC 6 - 3 in the lead.

Alex's Introduction was a heaven sent for SCC when they finally broke Bucks stubborn defence in the 22nd minute, with Alex Chua crossing the line to score the match opening try for SCC. SCC led 11- 3.

Bucks could not get their running game going and were pinned in their half by territorial kicks by SCC's scrumhalf, Khairul Hilmi and fly half Mohd Ridzuan. Most of the match was centered around both forward packs and unforced errors led to lots of stoppages in the 2nd part of the first half.

Valmiki then missed another penalty in the 34th minute before the half time break for SCC to lead 11 - 3.

SCC started the 2nd half with a bang by pinning Bucks in their 22m. A misplaced clearance by Bucks fly half Joel Wee was capitalized by the quick thinking SCC forwards who relayed the ball to wing Alex Chua for the and SCC's second try. SCC led 16 - 3.

Much of the 2nd half was played in the middle of the field with both teams being unable to capitalize on their possession and ball handling mistakes led to turnovers in possession.

With the clock ticking by the minute, Bucks staged a late rally and finally manage to release their much vaunted back line. Off a quickly taken penalty in the 37th minute, fullback Marcus Ahye cross the line to score Buck's only try of the game. He missed the conversion.

Bucks tried to rally into the dying minutes of the game like they did against Police in the semis last weekend but SCC held on strong to collect the 1st trophy for the club.

Final Score, SCC 16 Bucks 8

champions once more

this week has been a hectic and draining week. there were 3 important events that happened. after this week, everything will be over and its left to mugging. after being called back to play for division 2 semis n finals, i will now continue my haitus frm rugby.

Tuesday
Marks the end of the prelims but is another reminder that As are even closer. chem paper one was alright i guess. after paper had breakfast with my fellow legend player, khai nam. this lad here is one heck of a rugger. picked up the ball only late last year.. he has already made it to combined schools this year and was instrumental during the season. then, went to the street soccer court to play with the melays and others. good workout esp since finals in on sat.. any form of exercise to get fit is great! later ls, joel, hl n i went to queensway to buy shoes n boots. someone felt rich that day and bought 2 pairs la. for me, i got a white lotto boots. had a long discussion on what to do after As and decided that we are all gg to msia. hopefully u19 timings doesnt clash.

Wednesday
got back most of my results already. i dont think they deserved to be posted here. need to work harder n not give up. in the afternoon, had team sa lunch. food was so-so. but the company was great. nice to feel the company of ur fellow ruggers. mr tong n marcus came down too. unfortunately, our romeo was wearing his bow tie tshirt. wasted. haha.

in the evening, played a friendly soccer game with the teachers. a joint house comm and student council effort. started off the game with the teachers dominating the game. didnt know most of them were acutally fit. first goal came wen i tackled my pe tcher, mr lam. n the ref awarded a penalty. mr lim yh made not mistake to score it. n we were one down. i repaid my debt wen i scored the equalising goal. a kick out of the penalty box with went into the nets. haha. 2nd n 3rd parts of the game saw the students taking over control of the possessions. game ended 5-1 to us. great job people!

Thursday
basically jus mugged my arse off in school. at nite, went for scc trg. phil greenings was there to coach the 3rd. worked out a few new line-outs move and played some new interesting game. imagine playing rugby and soccer at the same time! not easy! but fun. haha. my parents took me home after trg.

Friday
probably the busiest day in my life. BUT im still not as busy as someone! until now we still cant find a day to meet. haha. busy people.

went to sch late. in time for physics lecture. then went for friday prayers. got a gentle reminder that fasting month starts on SUNDAY! good weight loss programme. for a month summore. my afternoon was spent for the zonal colours award. got my 3rd award this year. met most of the rj ruggers. caught up with most of them. mark n i did our usual stuff. n ilman ah.. aiyo. so tension! worse then me. haha.

at night went for the coach recognition award. mr tong was one of the awardees for Development Coaching Awards (Schools). his facial expression were the happiest i ever seen so far. other then the two finals we won. haha. i strongly believe mr tong deserves this award. the amount of hard work he has put in together with the other coaches were great. mr tong is one of people who had played a huge role in our sajc rugby success story.

taken from the Coach Recognition Awards 2006 Book:
In 2005, Gene helped coach both the St. Andrew's junor and secondary teams to the top three positions at the National Inter- Primary Schools Championships and the National Inter- Schools Championships. His contributions to the team were recently recognised by the School.

Having gone through the Singapore Rugby Union's Elite Coaching Seminar, Gene is a firm believer in the importance of sports science. He works closely with St Andrew's School physiotheraphy and counselor to improve the team's physical preparedness and mental strength.

The training programme is reviewed regularly to ensure it remains relevant and effective in helping the players' achieve their potential. Grounds are also checked prior to training session to ensure on- field safety. To build confidence and motivates his players, Gene regularly provide his teams with positive reinforcement.

CONGRATS MR GENE TONG!

Saturday
woke up early today for tuition n mugged for awhile before gg for my division 2 finals. if i dont mug later would feel guilty wen i played later. on the way to the club met ashraf cos was oso on the way. we went to get my cheese burger n energy drink while he got his redbull before gg to the club. had a team meeting before the game. i could see how serious the club was on wanting to win this division two championships. somehow, the feeling i had was just like another game feeling. good n bad.

the game kick- off with bucks taking the first 3 points with a converted penatly kick. scc soon came back to level the score with a penalty kick too. my performance i think was not on top mark as i wanted it to be. nevertheless, i still had my focus in the game. scc put more points in the first half. making us have the lead. second half saw bucks trying very hard to catch up. however scc kept their focus and defended hard. one area which we lacked was discipline. like in the semis, we committed alot of stupid infrigements. nevertheless, what matters the most is that we won the finals. for the 5th year running, we top the table in the division two league. after the game was nothing but celebrations. phil was surprised wen i told him i didnt drink or smoke. its a nono for me! left half way cos i was too tired. and here i am blogging now. haha. well done lads!

from sru webby:
The Singapore Cricket Club Division Two Team is also unbeaten on the way to the finals. Despite close matches against Blacks and Wolfpakz in the group stages, the team has shown maturity in winning those close games.

SCC will feature a host of former National under 19 players including Mohd Asrie, and James Leow. Other key players expected to play an important in tomorrow's final include Lionel Poh, Mohd Ashraf, Khairul Hilmi and Yik Tai Hoe.

SCC is coached by Damian Pereira and Phil Greening.

SCC DIVISION TWO CHAMPS! wohoo!

scc off to the finals!

my schedule today was a busy one. woke up arnd 8am to have tuition. as expected my tutor came late. n tat give me more time to catch up my sleep while waiting for him on my sofa. after tuition, rushed off to gleneagles hospital for an appoinment with my wrist surgeon, dr chan. he said my wrist has fully recovered and thus, he gave the green light for me to resume my usual activity- rugby. initially was quite scared to see him cos im worried he will say i need more time to recover. but thank god the xrays came out prefect showing the gap in the scaphoid (a bone in the wrist) had covered. after consulting and getting clear by my doc, i had to immediately rush down to scc cos our capt told us to gather there before taking a chartered bus to farrer park to play wolfpackz in the semi-finals.

although we left the club late and had to make a detour for a fellow player, who needed to have his macdonalds lunch before he could play, we still reached farrer park rather early. our physio, eunice did the usual tapings. the rugby playing field there have changed n moved down closer to the car park. so we need to get used to the new playing area. personally, the field now is much smaller than last time. at least in the past, the field was wide.

the game kicked- off with scc dominating wolfpackz in most department. however, the tables turned when scc went to sleep. there was not much continuity in scc's game bcos we were penalized for alot of infrigement. this was rather frustrating bcos everytime when we got were finally at pace and gaining momentum, a player had to give away possession by making basic mistakes. i think like what coach says, we are committing this errors bcos we may not be used to playing with each other thus having our own style. this resulted in wolfpackz taking the lead in the first half.

the second half was a total different story. after regrouping, refocusing and getting back that displicine we needed, scc took their game another to another level. once again dominating in most set pieces especially the linesouts where the turnovers were excellent, we got our act together and played as a team. a few team tries came in the second half and scc took the lead. as we finally settled down, we managed to maintain our lead till the end of the game. the final score was 22-10 in our favour and we are now in the finals. we will be playing bucks in the finals next saturday. the venue is still to be confirmed. nevertheless we are all hoping it would be the padang. after all, scc padang field is the best in singapore now.

taking into account i havent been touching (n i seriously mean touch) the ball for since july, my performance today was okay. passes were accurate but still have alot of room for improvements. fitness is something which i really need to work on! haha. it obvious that after 2-3 mths not playing, u cannot be as fit as you used to be. another area to work on would be my control of the forward pack. im too quiet and not demanding enough. nevertheless, on the whole, i wld say that it was still a comeback i wanted. eventhough it was scary cos not alot of players play the semis on their first return game. and what more finals on their 2nd game but im very sure and convinced i will be play even better. after all, tat is wat recovering from an injury is for. u rest at the same time reflect on ur playing ways so that u can improve on it and become an even better player wen u return.

what made my comeback game even sweeter was that my parents came to watch me! i think i have the best parents on earth. even after gg for one operation after another.. becoming a regular in mount alvernia, gleneagles and mt E, almost all the nurses recognise my face... and spending tons of money on my injury.. they still allowed me to play and even motivated me! they made sure i recovered the best possible way so that i can return playing as fast as possible and in good condition. in addition, they provided me with the equipment and more importantly, the support i needed. they are the best parents anyone can ask for and i thank God for having them. i love them! without them, i would dare say i wont be what i am today.

so now its back to the books (and not boots as much i want it to be.. haha) cos ultimately my priorities now lie in my academics. i want to do well in my As.

today also marks the final game for my dear mizuno boots. it will be retiring from rugby after serving me since late last august. this boots surely had an outstanding life span. so now it will have a well deserved spot in my throphy cabinet.
the outstanding service this boots had provided me:
- division 2 league champs 05.

- m1 schools 10s plate champs 05
- navy 10s champs 06
- scc 7s runners up 06
- nat sch a div champs 06
thank you boots! hahaha.
on a more brighter note, this also means i get to buy new boots!!! hahahaha.

its over.... (soon)

the major part of the prelims is over. most of us are already enjoying eventhough we still got chem paper one left. prelims was a disastor. esp maths paper two. i got no idea what they were asking me. i felt as though i was doing a paper on foreign language which i had nv heard of before. its damn irritating la.

i had my break yesterday and today. met up with the melays for lunch n movie. we had a good time. 7 guys watching the devil wears prada is super funny la. everybody must be wondering why. haha. the movie was quite nice. well mabye tats bcos i havent been watching move for ages. so everything is nice. haha. boons, dines n gwens dropped by while we were having lunch. haha. my evening was spend trg. i need to keep fit and burn those excess mass away. need to keep in shape for the u19s.

today played soccer in the morning. another way of trying to keep in shape. the weather initially was cloudy n cooling making it a perfect weather to play. however, after 15 minutes in the game, lightning and thunder payed us a visit. thus, according to procedure, we had to say indoors for awhile. soon after we continue. the melays (s56) played s76 in a friendly soccer game. the pitch condition was extremely poor. it was really hard trying to even pass the ball. nevertheless we managed to set up a few good balls leading 3-0 in the first half. second half had a slight change in control of possession. the s76 guys were having possession most of the time. the scored 2 goals in that half while we scored 1. the game ended 4-2 to our side. i must say the melays have played very well considering the level of fitness, weather and pitch condition. so it a thumbs up!

spent my afternoon visiting stef granny mrs elizabeth choy. its good to see stef doing alright.

alrites. im really very tired.

im a happy boy!

i finally went back for scc training on tue night after hitting the books all day long. yes! its about time i burn some of that fats. the last time i touched that rugby ball was in june.. since then went for op and stayed away from the game. i guess its really hard to keep myself away from something im very passionate about. rugby has been the only thing that kept me going. enjoying every single minute playing and watching. its a gd way of destressing myself esp during this period. scc trgs wld usually be on mon and wed but it has been changed to tue and thurs recently.

trg started around 7.30pm. went slightly earlier to catch up with the lads. the last time that i saw most of them was probably the end of season dinner early feb and i was out of the club scene for quite sometime. at least now im back. haha. trg started off with half-field touch and soon full field touch that is slowly being coverted to full contact. we had the expert terry wright to coach and guide us. he is really good. his explanations were simple and clear to understand. he was a former new zealand all blacks (click here to read more about him). after that "intensive" workout which i found out tat im horribly unfit. nevertheless its kind of expected, since i havent been trg for months. haha. the premier and thirds didnt have enough numbers so we had a join team run. initially i was very lost bcos im not sure of the moves. after taking sometime to educate myself, things went perfectly fine. my passes were still quite sharp. so thats a thumbs up. haha. finally, we finished our trg with some fitness. the first thing that came to my mind was like.. oh shitt.. fitness?! im already dying here. thank god. the fitness we did were no where close to wat the saints rugby team is doing. yup. i felt really good after tat! its like i felt so fresh and suddenly being more of myself! i came to conclude.. its really hard to take rugby out of my life. impossible! david moore gave me a ride back after trg. thanks!

today went for a video shoot. mr tong was awarded one of the coach recognition awards by singapore sports council. so we (AT, BR, AC, RL n myself) had a photo plus video taken of him coaching us. i think he really deserves this award. i still remember that time wen i was looking at the requirements on the nomination forms, i noticed mr tong actually fulfilled most of it. i decided to nominate him for this outstanding award. with the help of mr ho and a few other ruggers, the nomination form was sent it jus a few hours before the closing time. haha. kudos to mr tong for receiving the award! after the shoot, we went for lunch. great food!!

alrites. back to the books.

rugby, oh how much i miss you.

i starting to miss rugby alot. life without rugby is really boring because i always feel that theres something not right. my body is used to the hard knocks, cuts and bruises. haha. i cant wait to start passing and kicking the ball again. life used to revolve around rugby. nothing else mattered. i want that life back badly.

18th Birthday

i dont think most teenagers would want to spend their 18th birthday like i did. well it was a rather quiet one this year (or like every other years). my first present came from my clique during anand's birthday party. had to rush off from alumni dinner jus to make sure i wldnt miss mr harikes surprise party. haha. n so they look the advantage of whacking me since they did not managed to hit me last year. they sure did this year!

today was jus like any other day in my life. woke up in the morning for tuition. i woke up so early to end up waiting for my tutor cos he overslept. after tat, went for lunch with my family. jus as we were about to leave, someone opposite my block came falling down. heard a loud crash sound. n wen were at the void deck, police were there already. the area was cordoned off. just like any other CSI show you watch on tv. quite traumatising. anyway, george later called me n asked if i wanted be a linesman for scc vs safsa game. since i had no plans, i took the offer. at least can earn 40 bucks. caught up with the boys at the club. tankards lost but the premiers won. good stuff. wanted to stay back for the dinner n watch trinations but mum asked me to go for uncle's chalet. so i decided to drop by. and as usual, pple go family chalets to eat n eat n eat. the sweetest thing that made my day was my small little cute cousins singing me a birthday song! that really touched my heart! thanks you.

finally i want to thank you guys for your msgs:

i know really know what kind of a lousy person i am. im a really lousy good-for-nothing friend. i dont care for others.
jus be nice to me only when you need help cos ur in trouble, need money, free ride or need smth from me. dont try to be friends with me cos i cant promise you i will be a good friend. i dont believe in such things anymore.
nevertheless, im will always here render my help to anyone who needs it.
thats wat im for. thats my life. thats my fate.
and i've learnt how to accept it.
